When can you start massage during pregnancy?
Pregnancy is a beautiful season of change, but your body may start feeling those changes long before your baby arrives. As your body grows and adapts, you may notice more tension in your back, hips, neck, and shoulders, or simply feel the need for more rest and nurturing care.
One of the questions I hear often is:
“When can I start prenatal massage?”
At Breathe In Wellness, I begin working with pregnant mamas in the first trimester, after 12 weeks, with your comfort, health, and individual pregnancy always in mind.
Why 12 Weeks?
The first trimester is a time of tremendous change. Your body is adjusting to pregnancy, and you may be experiencing fatigue, nausea, headaches, or simply feeling a little more sensitive than usual.
After 12 weeks, prenatal massage can become a beautiful way to support your changing body as you move into the next stage of pregnancy.
Of course, every pregnancy is different. If you have any medical concerns or your pregnancy requires special care, please talk with your obstetrician, midwife, or healthcare provider before receiving massage.
Prenatal Massage During the Second Trimester
For many women, the second trimester can feel like a sweet spot.
Morning sickness may begin to settle, energy may return, and your growing belly may not yet be making everyday movement too difficult.
At the same time, your changing body can begin creating new areas of tension.
Your lower back, hips, legs, and shoulders may start working differently as your posture and center of gravity change.
This can be a wonderful time to make massage part of your regular self-care.
Prenatal Massage During the Third Trimester
By the third trimester, your body is carrying more weight and working harder to prepare for birth.
You may notice:
More pressure through your hips and pelvis
Lower back tension
Achy legs and feet
Neck and shoulder tension
Difficulty getting comfortable
Increased fatigue
Prenatal massage during this stage is less about “fixing” your body and more about supporting you through the final stretch.
It's a chance to slow down, breathe, and receive some nurturing care when your body may really need it.
You Don't Have to Wait Until You're Uncomfortable
You don't have to wait until you're hurting to schedule a prenatal massage.
Massage can also be about relaxation, body awareness, supporting your changing body, and giving yourself intentional time to rest.
Pregnancy asks a lot of you.
You deserve to care for yourself along the way, not just after your baby arrives.
